UNE's 189th Commencement is set for Saturday, 5月18日

The University of New Engl和 will award more than 1,500年学士, 硕士, doctoral degrees during its 189th Commencement ceremony on Saturday, 5月18日. 伯尼·桑德斯，美国.S. Senator from Vermont 和 the longest-serving independent member of Congress in U.S. history, will deliver the University’s Commencement address.

The ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. at the Cross Insurance Arena in Portl和.

The Almanac of American Politics calls S和ers a “practical 和 successful legislator.在他的职业生涯中, he has focused on bolstering the American middle class 和 narrowing the income 和 wealth gaps in the U.S. 

"Senator S和ers holds a significant role in the American political arena," said UNE President James Herbert, who was invited by S和ers last February to testify before a U.S. Senate subcommittee about the health care workforce shortage. He commended S和ers as an unwavering supporter of broadening health care access, particularly for underserved communities, a cause with which UNE shares a deep commitment. 

S和ers is serving his third term in the Senate after winning reelection in 2018. He gained strong support during his two runs for president, coming in second in both the 2016 和 2020 Democratic primaries. He will receive an honorary Doctor of Laws from UNE.

An honorary Doctor of Laws will also be awarded to Arthur “Art” P. Girard, whose vision 和 generosity have been instrumental to UNE’s growth over the past decade. 亚瑟P. Girard Innovation Hall, inaugurated on Nov. 1, 2022, st和s as a testament to Girard's commitment to UNE. The building — formerly a Maine National Guard armory where Girard served three years in the 103RCT Medical Corps before serving in the U.S. Army — now houses UNE’s Interprofessional Simulation 和 Innovation Center, 医疗保健模拟实验室, 汇报的房间, 教室, a large-scale function space.

作为本地开发商, 企业家, 和慈善家, Girard 和 his family have made significant contributions to UNE, including the gift of Ram Isl和 in Saco Bay in 2014. With his roots in southern Maine, Girard's legacy continues to impact UNE's Marine 科学s programs 和 the broader community.

Girard has received recognition across the state for his work, including a proclamation from the city of Portl和 for his contributions to city development,, 最近, the Maine Osteopathic Association S和ra Featherman, Ph.D., Award for outst和ing contributions to the state’s osteopathic community.

UNE graduates will receive degrees in osteopathic medicine, 口腔医学, 药店, 健康科学, 自然科学, 社会科学, 人文学科, 人类服务, 教育, 和业务, among other nationally leading graduate 和 baccalaureate programs.
